Gusev was once a gifted director in regional and experimental theatres; now he is a dispatcher for Moscow's street-cleaning service. The whole novel is his monologue, an unstoppable, darkly comic flood of talk about the absurdity of life in Russia, a country where no absurd play could shock anyone because life itself is one. Russia appears in it half stuck in Soviet ways and half in a fantastical new capitalism, and the talk is full of portraits of extraordinary people who could have stepped out of Gogol or Chekhov, and of incredible anecdotes that turn out to be true.
