After reunification, the psychiatrist Altfried Janich takes a job at the 'Ostschloss', a run-down baroque palace in eastern Germany that houses a psychiatric institution. Towards his patients he takes up the 'sun position', offering them orientation and comfort. When his friend Odilo dies in a mysterious car accident, Janich himself slides onto the night side of things. By day the patients come too close; by night he wanders the halls like a ghost. Memories torment him, and his family history catches up with him, in a portrait of a country where present and past, East and West, the beautiful and the ugly shape each other.
