A family saga told in three novellas follows the Hutsul families of the Chev'iuks, Keivans and Varvarchuks from the days of Austria-Hungary and the First World War to the middle of the twentieth century, along with the wanderings of Marynka Bohodukha and Oleksa the Mute. Long ago Kyrylo Chev'iuk spurned a great love and married a rich woman, and no one in his family will find happiness. The youngest son Dmytryk dies before he is twenty, and his brothers Pavlo, Oksentii and Andrii quarrel over land. The second novella turns to Petrunia, the woman at the centre of the first, and her marriage to Ivan Varvarchuk. Love, hatred, envy and revenge drive the families through the century.
