Carlo and Margherita call it 'the misunderstanding': the doubt that has cracked the surface of their marriage. Carlo, who teaches at a university, was seen in a university bathroom with a student. She felt unwell and he helped her, he tells the rector, his colleagues and his wife, and the student, Sofia, confirms it. The suspicion runs through the following years of their lives, and through the people around them, raising the question of whether resisting a temptation really means being faithful, or whether that renunciation might betray our deepest nature.
