Vincenzo Chironi sets foot in Sardinia for the first time in 1943, the year of hunger and malaria, carrying only an old document with his name and date of birth. To find out who he really is he will have to make a harder journey than the steamer crossing. In Nuoro his grandfather Michele Angelo, a master blacksmith, becomes father and accomplice to him, and his aunt Marianna sees in his arrival a chance to redeem a life marked by misfortune. Years later, when Vincenzo seems settled in Nuoro, the pull of blood returns: he falls in love with Cecilia, though she is engaged to Nicola, a distant relative of his.
