The East India Company is edging into the hills of what is now Arunachal Pradesh, and the Abor and Mishmee peoples resist the outsiders. One night Gimur, a young Abor woman, meets Kajinsha, a Mishmee man; they elope and make a home on his land close to the Tibetan border. Father Nicolas Krick, a gentle, devout Frenchman, means to reach Tibet by an eastern route and brushes aside warnings about the wild country beyond the Assam plains. Again and again the hill people turn him back, afraid that soldiers will come after the missionaries. Drawing on the real disappearance of a priest in the 1850s, the story moves between the two villages and the priest's own view, as his resolve pulls everyone he meets into its consequences.
