The narrator's memories turn around Anna, his Italian friend, who stands for freedom and culture and becomes his protector, muse and guide into love, knowledge and art. Against her he sets the women of his own world: his mother, a grieving, long-suffering figure, and the young Bedouin women of the village of Tâ.
