Pompeii in 78 and 79 AD is a small, harsh country town, and disaster is only months away. Publius Paquius Proculus, once its mayor, is beset by trouble at home. Methe, a mime performer, loves in vain. Maria, a Christian, finds herself in difficulty when letters from the apostle Paul arrive. Sittius, an innkeeper loyal to the memory of Nero, lets his room on the street of brothels to anyone who pays. Above them looms Vesuvius, seemingly part of the backdrop, smitten with the whole town and sending it love letters, so far causing no other trouble. Bawdy and irreverent, the book peoples the streets, villas, taverns and brothels of the town.
