Five largely separate stories, told by different narrators, follow the people of Unit 701, a secret intelligence unit where rare gifts are put to work listening in on the enemy and breaking codes. Among them are A Bing, a blind man with astonishing hearing; Huang Yiyi, a brilliant, unstable woman mathematician; an old code-breaker who works in his dreams; and a spy whose soul recounts a perilous mission. Shut away in the dark, they give everything to their ciphers, and to making sense of their own fates.
