Ivana tells her story already knowing that it stops at fourteen, when soldiers of an enemy unit kill her. She grows up with her cousin and best friend Dunja in a small village in the hills of central Bosnia, near Žepče, among parents, a brother, grandparents and village women who live in tune with nature, and the two girls dream of love, friendship and the life awaiting them in town. Then the war reaches the village, first with a brief flight to a neighbouring village, then with a massacre. Jumping back and forth through her memories from the age of seven, Ivana recalls the happy days of childhood and the horror of her death without ever speaking of hatred or explaining the conflict.
