At fifteen the narrator joins the class of Morocco's crown prince, the future Hassan II, at the Royal College, where outranking a prince is dangerous. Hoping for office, he is exiled; thinking himself finished, he is made royal historiographer, like Racine at Versailles. Then a mysterious young woman starts telling him of plots brewing. Thirty years of Moroccan history, up to the Years of Lead.
