Waking from a nightmare about a comet, a man discovers a diary left outside his flat and starts reading. Its writer sailed for Africa, lost his ship to a giant wave and washed up on an uninhabited island. There the castaways do nothing to save themselves: they swap ever stranger tales of maimings, odd medical cases and science-fiction happenings, each story opening onto another and circling back, like items from an old communist-era newspaper. The narration speaks in a stiff, old-fashioned Polish that makes the speaker sound like a man from before the war. Pictures and text mix freely, from illustrated prose with speech balloons to proper comic strips, drawn in a deliberately clumsy realist line against bare backgrounds in muted colours.
