An unemployed film projectionist has barricaded himself in his flat in Basel; only the job centre or loneliness drives him out of the house. One day on the tram a man catches his eye, and from then on he follows him: Klaus Halm. For all his inconspicuousness, Halm seems to be the narrator's exact opposite, for with a wife, a child and a job he has everything the narrator lacks. The boundlessly cynical narrator sinks deeper and deeper into Klaus Halm's minutely observed life, a triangle full of attraction and repulsion, until he is no longer sure who is living whose life.
