Lukijan Pavlović grows up after the Second World War as the adopted son of a village teacher and former Partisan commissar, and slowly discovers that this man killed his father, a soldier of the SS Prinz Eugen division, while his German mother died in one of the camps where many of the region's Germans were deported. Only as a young man does he learn his real name and origins. Fleeing the narrowness of home, he goes to study in the city, and left-wing ideals take him on to Czechoslovakia and East Germany, while he keeps searching for the vanished Danube Germans and for who he really is. The story runs from the war to the first days of the Homeland War.
