On 25 July 1943, in Riccione, a schoolgirl's tennis match with Anna Maria Mussolini is interrupted: the Duce's daughter has to flee, because her father has just been arrested in Rome. From fourteen to eighteen the girl keeps a diary, from her comfortable Roman neighbourhood to her joining the Communist Party. It records the war and the liberation, her first trips to Prague and to postwar Paris, her first comrades, the joyful work with young people from all over Europe building a railway in Tito's Yugoslavia, her Jewish uncles and cousins, and the questions and rebellions of a spirit impatient to take shape.
