A vet in his late forties narrates, speaking directly to her, the story of his craving for a farmer's daughter he calls his 'little animal', though she is a bewildered girl just turned fourteen. Over one sweltering summer each draws close to the other, both wanting to flee the moods and hollowness of country life and what was planted in them early on. The single breathless monologue forces the reader to share his view, while through his telling the girl's fear and hurt keep breaking in.
