One winter day Matthies sets off to go skating and never returns. His little sister Jas, growing up on a strictly Reformed dairy farm, is left bewildered, and through her eyes we watch each member of the family cope with the loss. Their parents are so numbed by sorrow that they fail to see Jas, her younger sister Hanna and their brother Obbe slowly losing their way. Obbe leads the children in grim experiments on animals, while Hanna and Jas long for a rescuer to carry them away to the Other Side and teach them about sex.
