Yang Baishun, son of a tofu seller in Yanjin, worships a man who leads funeral laments and wants nothing to do with tofu. He leaves home and works as a butcher, a dyer and a water carrier without caring for any of it, and becomes the ninth convert of an Italian priest, who renames him Moses. He marries into the family of Wu Xiangxiang, who runs a steamed-bun shop, and becomes Wu Moses, but he has nothing to say to his wife, only to her small daughter Qiaoling. When Xiangxiang runs off with a neighbour, Moses goes looking for her and loses the girl on the way. Seventy years later, Qiaoling's son, Niu Aiguo, repeats the journey in search of someone to talk to.
