In fragments of verse, two Sámi families are followed over roughly a hundred years, from the early 1900s to today. At the start, a woman and her youngest boy wait in a tent with the elderly and the small children while the men of the family move the reindeer towards an island in Norway's far north. Within a few years the frontier will close, the family will be uprooted, and later generations will inherit other troubles. Gradually their lives are bound up with Swedish colonial rule and with the slow erosion of a bond to land, language and nature, summed up in the North Sámi word ædnan.
