Paris, May 1968. Dimas Suryo, an Indonesian political exile, meets Vivienne Deveraux, a French student caught up in the protests. At the same time he hears that his friend Hananto Prawiro has been arrested in Jakarta and declared dead. With his passport revoked, Dimas and other journalists and artists drift from Santiago to Havana and Peking before finding asylum in Europe, where he and three friends run the Restoran Tanah Air in Paris. He is haunted by guilt as friends at home are hunted down after the events of 30 September 1965, and by the memory of Hananto's wife Surti. In May 1998 his daughter Lintang goes to Indonesia to record the stories of families of the victims, and with Hananto's son Segara Alam she witnesses the riots that end Suharto's rule.
