One gloomy morning Nadira Suwandi finds that her mother, Kemala Yunus, has taken her own life. Kemala was known for being expressive and free-thinking, always struggling to find herself, and her death comes as a shock. The stories follow how it shapes Nadira as a child, as a journalist, as a lover and as a wife, and how it finally leads her into a world of sexuality she had never explored.
