Whoever ends up at Hotel Sapiens has fled a world that may already be gone. The place is a shelter and a zoo, an asylum, a school and a museum, a camp for evacuees, and a clinic where the inmates are examined as if they carried some rare illness, which they do: being human. The residents include an eye doctor gone blind, the Everyday Person, a conspiracy theorist fond of studying clouds, the Higgs boson, a therapist whose own mind has failed, and Peik, who exchanges letters with his dead daughter. Over all of them watch machines that have surpassed their human creators in both intellect and ethics. Through their tales and meetings the book examines what being human means.
