Edwin and Matilda: An Unlikely Love Story

Matilda is twenty-two and Edwin, a photographer, is sixty-two; in the southern South Island of New Zealand the two strike up an unlikely friendship that becomes a love affair. Matilda tells the story, and as she comes to know Edwin she keeps thinking about their mothers: his, who said she loved him and then left, and hers, who stayed and called her stupid. Which of them, she wonders, did more harm?
