Seven women, each from a different country, wake in a white, featureless space that lies somewhere after death and offers no way out except through words and stories. They include Shlomith, a performance artist from New York; Polina, a chief accountant from Moscow; Rosa Imaculada, a Brazilian heart-transplant patient; Nina, a well-to-do lady from Marseille; Wlbgis, a Dutch woman with throat cancer; Maimuna, a Senegalese girl who dreams of modelling; and Ulrike, an Austrian teenager. Time as they knew it has stopped, and their bodily needs fade one by one: first pain and pleasure, then touch itself. None of them knows what happened. The book moves between essay, lecture, fairy tale, play and poetry.
