Florian Herscht, a huge, kind-hearted cleaner of building facades in a small town in Thuringia, writes letters to Angela Merkel, signing them only with his name and postcode because the matter is confidential. The story is set in present-day eastern Germany, at once the homeland of Johann Sebastian Bach's music and an ever less secret base of neo-Nazi movements. More and more unexplained and frightening things happen in grey everyday life: strange graffiti at places dedicated to Bach, residents who vanish, a nearly fatal picnic and an explosion, after which further disasters can no longer be stopped.
