After his forced 'detour' to Siberia, the detective Szindbád is back in Nyárliget, now an officer of the police of the so-called people's democracy. Colleagues and superiors watch his past and present, so every decision has to be weighed with care: what to make of a man who grew up in Baghdad, served in the police of the Horthy era, was taken to Siberia at the end of the war and became an investigator there after his release from the camp? Is he working for the Soviets, or is he a hidden reactionary? He is tolerated because experienced detectives are badly needed: under the dictatorship of the proletariat people still steal, cheat, lie, kill, hide their crops and, worse, talk politics. The cases open onto one of the bleakest periods of the Hungarian countryside, softened by humour and a hidden, mythical world.
