Anno is seven, and spends five afternoons a week at ballet school, when she first 'cracks'. Her mother sticks up for her after a scuffle with two boys, and Anno, furious that anyone could claim to know the truth about her, feels her head split open and says far too much. She gives the feeling a name and forbids it, to no avail. Later she discovers that her parents ended a second pregnancy so that her dancing could go on, and the brother or sister who never was starts to visit her like a daydream, talking with her. Whenever love comes near, Anno cracks again. By high school she distrusts romance, refuses family life and moves out into the garden, into a red tent, beyond the reach of her mother's 'it's for your own good'.
