January 1898, in a cold Paris room: an elderly Finnish plant scientist writes at his desk wrapped in a quilt. William N. is brilliant, but his opinions have pushed him to the margins of his field. Ill and alone, he studies lichens, toils over the second volume of his major work, notes everything that irritates him about Parisians on his walks, and returns again and again to the same few obsessions from his past.
