Elín, now in her seventies, still devotes herself to making props and special-effects make-up for stage and screen, and lives alone. Cartons holding a past she has put out of mind turn up in her flat just as she starts on the staging of a script by Ellen Álfsdóttir, a young playwright everyone is talking about. Years ago the two women met in dreadful circumstances; Ellen has no memory of it and Elín is losing hers. The novel explores mothers and daughters, abuse, power and the work of memory.
