Lazar is thirty-seven, good-looking, cocky and drifting: he has worked as a driver, barman and tennis coach in city after city before settling in Brussels, and he lets his successful girlfriend Lena pay for their holiday in Italy. News that his mother, once a famous opera singer who lost her voice, has died calls him back to Bulgaria for the funeral. There a striking young woman, Aya, slips him her number, and an email arrives from someone signing as Blue Rose. Dumped by Lena and short of money, he stumbles on an old family secret, that another woman gave birth to him, and sets off in search of his real mother and of himself.
