Theseus, an unschooled, illiterate but sharp-witted man from a village between the mountains Mogila and Mogilchitsa, tells his own story in rough, dialect-laden speech. He falls for Pagane, whose violin plays music with healing power, and when outsiders abduct her he sets out to save her, running up against a criminal gang of men in shiny black jeeps. He carries with him a diary he found by the river, the diary of a certain P, which he cannot read and which Pagane's mother, a former teacher, refuses to read for him. Behind his troubles lies Dozlo, a strange force that scrambles people's sense of honour and sin, love and hate. The novel closes a trilogy set in the same village.
