The narrator and Yuki, Yoshida and Maiko: two couples bound together by the friendship of the two wives. When Yoshida takes off from home for a while, the women answer with something like a declaration of war and vanish themselves, promising to return in around ten days. Their letters and telegrams keep coming, and, following them, the narrator and Yoshida take to the road side by side: a drive, a night at a spa hotel, an outing under the moon, and a slowly shrinking distance between two men.
