A reclusive seventeen-year-old sees himself in the toki, Japan's crested ibis, whose scientific name is Nipponia nippon and whose character he carries in his own surname. He also projects the image of a threatened species in need of protection onto a former classmate he is fixated on. Convinced that both are in danger, he devises what he calls a final solution to the Nipponia nippon problem and, in October 2001, travels to the ibis conservation centre on Sado Island to carry it out.
