In 1900 a Viennese merchant, Franc Naglič, and his wife Fani have a daughter, Irma. Business failures drive the family to Trieste, and when things go no better there and Franc plans to flee his debts to America, his half-sister Julija Klebl pays what he owes and invites them to her estate in Lower Carniola. There Franc becomes the master of the house, Irma is set on a course of study and the old lawyer Bezlaj keeps the books. The First World War barely touches them. In 1922 two young men, a nephew of the Bezlajs and his talkative friend Dragotin, come to stay, and the quiet coexistence of very different people begins to crack once hidden affections come to light.
