One Last Pledge

Raghunath has built an orderly, successful life in which everything runs to his plans and wishes. Then something happens, and the world he has earned turns ambitious, aggressive and violent, and the close, gentle things in it begin to break apart. Spread across a village, a city and America, the novel sets one ageing man, ever more alone, against the consumerism of a globalising India, while also showing the rise of oppressed castes and the strength and pain of a new kind of woman.
