After a novel about hitting bottom and climbing back, this one follows the fall further down and the escape outwards. A young doctor spends four years in a psychiatric hospital, as a physician, as a man in love, as someone fighting meaninglessness and looking for meaning. His thorny path to self-knowledge, told in almost photographic images, is bleak, yet a longing for a romantic world shows through.
