One September weekend in 1989, seventeen-year-old Silva Vela vanishes from a small town on the Dalmatian coast. The police quickly learn that she was mixed up in selling drugs, a side of her that her family never knew, but this gets them no closer to her. For her parents and her brother Mate nothing is the same again, and they spend the next 27 years searching. Her disappearance also leaves its mark on others in the town, among them Brane, her boyfriend at the time, and Adrijan, the young man who was the last to see her. Meanwhile Croatia changes around them: one system collapses, war comes, and a new ruling elite takes over, shaping every life in the story.
