On an outing to open ground beside a lake sit three people: a pipe smoker, his female cousin, and the narrator, who lives with her. They go back over familiar stories, the pipe smoker's father, the day a young lover's father walked in on her and the boy, the music that reaches the house she shares with the narrator. Crows hover as though prepared to wait, storm clouds pile up, and out of the trees steps a stranger gripping a dog lead.
