Carlos Carballo is caught in 2014 attempting to take from a Bogotá museum the suit Jorge Eliécer Gaitán wore when he was shot in 1948. A troubled man who sees omens everywhere, he believes coincidence does not exist: Gaitán's murder, which cut Colombia's history in half, the killing of John F. Kennedy and the 1914 assassination of the Liberal senator Rafael Uribe Uribe are all linked. After a chance meeting, the novelist who tells the story finds himself drawn into Carballo's obsessions and into hidden corners of the nation's violent past.
