When Vasili loses his parents, a fiery-eyed wanderer bound for Jerusalem adopts the boy as his pupil. The pilgrim is Grigori Rasputin, the holy man who outrages the capital's nobility and splits rulers and commoners alike, yet whom the imperial family relies on absolutely. His teaching is unorthodox, mixing sanctity with sin, the devil never far behind God, and at Rasputin's side Vasili watches the final, doomed years of Nicholas II and his family.
