In the near future there are no more states or governments: corporations run the world, and the planet has been renamed Friedman, after the economist of the self-regulating market. Money and greed are the only virtues, and solvency decides everything, including where one may live. In wealthy Zone A emotions count as useless ballast and are dampened with drugs, parents and children live apart, books and the internet have been destroyed, and nobody worries about the ecological disaster; the poor Zones B and C are anarchic but emotionally free. When a revolt breaks out, Dr Gerhard Schmidt, a privileged citizen of Zone A, is drawn into the hunt for its elusive leader, Blacktooth, a journey that slowly changes him.
