On a business trip, the Swiss factory heir Preising finds himself at an upmarket oasis resort in Tunisia, where he witnesses elaborate preparations for a wedding. Wealthy young English people from the London financial world have gathered friends and family for a great party and are celebrating extravagantly in advance, while signs of economic crisis thicken into catastrophe: the British pound collapses, and soon after, England is bankrupt, with consequences that do not spare Tunisia either. Preising, as a Swiss spared the worst, sees how thin the veneer of civilisation is, and learns his own lesson in globalisation, since his company has its goods made in Tunisia.
