De onervarenen

It is 1847 and Odile and Koben, young and penniless, are driven from their farm. An emigration company promises riches overseas, so they sign up, sailing with roughly fifty neighbours on a hard voyage to South America, where good soil supposedly lies ready for the plough. Once ashore, the settlers are abandoned in the tropics. Their seed hardly sprouts, a despotic landlord seizes most of what does grow, sickness takes lives, and doom-laden preachers gain ever more power over a frightened community.
