Autumn 1985: John Lindqvist, who hopes to earn his living doing magic tricks at restaurant tables, rents a gloomy little flat in a back building on Luntmakargatan in central Stockholm, beside the Brunkeberg tunnel. Weeks later a shoplifting arrest lands him in a police cell overnight. While he is locked up, something shifts that no one can quite explain, and when he gets back, the place is altered: dead birds rain down and the other tenants act peculiarly. At the end of the basement laundry is a shower room kept under lock and key, and inside it waits something that can transport people to a different place and grant their wishes, if they pay in blood. The deeper John gets involved, the further he is swept into sorcery, brutality and a sense of belonging.
