Egon Heuchler has spent his life running the Zircco Fantastico, and its performers, from a cat woman and a bearded lady to conjoined twins and a daredevil diver, are his only family. In Berlin in spring 1940 the Nazis take the circus over and order it on a tour, though Egon feels as spent as an aging lion. Still, the cat woman rekindles something in him, and the troupe has a touch of real magic.
