Qingfeng Street, a village in southern Shaanxi, has two great clans: the Bai family, ruined long ago, and the Xia family, still standing. Of the four Xia brothers, Tianyi has long run the village committee, and Tianzhi, a retired headmaster, loves Qinqiang opera; his son Xia Feng has become a writer known across the province. The story is told by Zhang Yinsheng, the village madman, who is hopelessly in love with Bai Xue, a beautiful singer in the county opera troupe who marries Xia Feng. Over twenty years of reform, the villagers live out births, marriages, quarrels and deaths, while the farmers' burdens grow, farmland is lost and the old village culture, opera with it, fades away.
