At 79, Antti Vallas tumbles off a roof. His life does not flash before him as he drops; the change comes only when he wakes, and memories of serving in a German Waffen-SS unit cut into his days. The novel tells of the Finnish volunteers who went to Germany in the Second World War and of men who came home haunted by it, and it pulls down the heroic myths about them.
