During King Jayadhwaj Singha's war with the Mughals, Muslim soldiers are taken prisoner and held in Assam. Made to hammer brass and bell metal, they become known as Moriyas. Later the king orders them to grow rice, though they have neither oxen nor any skill in working wet fields, so they haul mud up from the bed of the Brahmaputra to make their land, and the hollow they dig gives the settlement its name. The novel tells the story of this place and its people up to the river erosion that swallows the village, and sets that loss beside a wider wearing away of human values.
