Fleischman is thirty, has done nothing with his life, never travelled and never had a girlfriend, but he reads the sky like a book: clouds, pressure systems, wind. He does odd jobs at the hotel on top of Ještěd, the mountain above Liberec, a town he somehow cannot leave. Weather charts give his days their order, and so does Franz, an elderly Sudeten German who brings back from Germany, in coffee tins, what remains of his old Liberec classmates, to bury them in their home town. Watching the sky, Fleischman concludes that his only escape is up through the clouds, and then a waitress called Ilja turns up at the reception desk.
