Shakespeare's tragedy moved to present-day Finland. Vante is seventeen and Julia thirteen, and what keeps them apart is not a family feud but four years between them, disapproving parents and finally the law. Vante's love is total, reckless and fiercely protective; Julia, gentle and still a child, learns to look away from what she cannot bear. When the adults close ranks, the two run, heading across a frozen country towards a life together. On the way they run into kind passers-by and family members, but love has made them too suspicious to accept help, ski through deep snow, cross treacherous ice, and shelter in a grandmother's frosty bedroom. The story is told in a breathless, almost unpunctuated voice that mimics speech.
